Engine Parts back from the Machine Shop

Image
I dropped off the Block, Heads, Crank, Cam, Rods & Pistons off at the machine shop, and about 2 weeks later the work was completed.  Received confirmation most everything was new and in great condition.  They checked for cracks in the Block and the Heads, none found.  1 cylinder required honing for some surface rust. Crank and Cam were checked as well as bearings, Cam bearings replaced as they needed to be removed to clean the block.  Valves were removed from the Heads and it did appear the valves were not all seated properly, so they took care of that.  The Crank and Cam races were buffed out.  The report they gave me is that it is all ready to go. I was hoping to install the Cam and Crank over a 4-day Christmas break.  But I discovered the Cam bearings were not installed with the oil hold aligned with the Crank oil galley.  I'll be calling the machine shop today to see about getting that fixed.  If I hadn't caught that, the cam wo...

Engine Block Completely Stripped Down

Finished removing everything from the block.  Now I need to get measurements to figure out what someone had done here.  Unknown piston/bore sizing, unknown cam and crank, and unknown heads (different casting numbers on them).  I'll be on the lookout for a good local machine shop to have the block thoroughly checked out.  Then I can make my decisions on what to keep and what to replace/upgrade.  Not sure what method you call this, as far as the installation of the rear crank cap.  That was a pain to remove.

Begin Disassembly

Engine transferred to the stand.  This engine was definitely out in the weather for a considerable amount of time. Began disassembly.  Removal of the valve covers was enlightening to say the least.  Although I noticed the valve springs seemed to be in good condition.... interesting. Removed the infamous heavy intake manifold.  Used the engine hoist to save my back. Oil galley was surprising as well, despite the rusty ooze in one corner.  Hmmm. Got one head off and the pistons look like they haven't been run yet.  Still have cross-hatching on the cylinder walls.  Someone has been in here.  The valves also look like they haven't seen any use.  And the timing chain looks new as well.   Well, still a lot to do but I may be able to utilize someone's work, after an in-depth analysis of course.  Next I will pull the pistons, cam, and crank to do some measuring and see what I really have.  Block numbers indicate 352, not jus...

Decided to pull the engine as winter approaches and the engine rebuild will make a good winter project.  Not too difficult to pull an engine with the body out of the way.  Still not totally sure what path I will take on the rebuild.  Some will depend on the condition of the block, heads, etc.. Anyway, next step is disassembly of the 352 FE engine.

Worked more on getting the cab and bed in the air so the chassis can roll out from under them.  Temporary suspension, of course, I have a stand I made with casters for the bed and will make one for the cab as well.  That way I can lower them down and have them set down safely.  Next I will be pulling the chassis out, power wash it in the driveway, then pull/push it into the garage and begin disassembly.

It has been a while, getting back to it around March of 2021. Front inner fenders removed and have the bed blocked in the air.
